How this guide works
Most restaurant lists are one person's opinion, one platform's algorithm, or one advertiser's budget. This site is none of those. It's a cross-examination.
The three worlds
The Crowd — Google. Ratings and review counts scraped from Google Maps across Chiang Mai. Locals, students and long-stay regulars; the best measure of everyday consistency — and where the ฿100 legends live.
The Travelers — TripAdvisor. The city's ranked restaurant list. Visitors judge the whole experience, and their favourites — riverside dinners, cooking-class kitchens — are often invisible to the local crowd's list.
The Inspectors — MICHELIN. The Chiang Mai selection of the MICHELIN Guide Thailand (2025 selection; the city's honours are Bib Gourmands and Selected listings — no stars yet, and that's the point: its glory is street food). Encoded from the published guide; the guide lists a handful of further Selected spots we add as we verify them.
Matching & badges
We track 243 records across the three sources and match them by normalised name with a fuzzy fallback tuned to avoid false pairs (generic names like "Garden" or "Thai Food" never auto-match). The finding that shapes this site: the three lists barely overlap in Chiang Mai — only a dozen places appear on two lists at once. Badges: Soi Star (MICHELIN honours at street prices), Double-Checked (two lists), Crowd Favorite (4.5★+ with 1,000+ Google reviews), Travelers' Treasure (4.8+/5 from 500+ reviews), Hidden Gem (4.6★+ under 200 reviews) and Baht Hero (4.5★+ under ฿300). Order within sections comes from a Bayesian blend of ratings weighted by review volume — never from payment.
What we will never do
Sell placement. Rank with a secret formula. Trash a restaurant — every place here already cleared a high bar, and Chiang Mai's food scene deserves cheerleaders, not hit pieces. If a restaurant is listed, someone genuinely loves eating there.
How the site pays for itself
Some “reviews & booking” links are affiliate links (TripAdvisor). If you book through one we may earn a small commission at no cost to you. Affiliates never affect who is listed, what badges they earn, or the order they appear in — the data decides.
Freshness & corrections
Snapshot captured August 2026; refreshed on a rolling basis. Ratings move daily and Chiang Mai hours change often — many street legends close when the day's broth runs out.
